0002 GMT: Stars have been arriving on the red carpet for more than an hour now. So far we've spied cast members from "The Artist," "Bridesmaids" and "The Help."

Bérénice Bejo (a redhead - who knew?), the 35-year-old best supporting actress contender from "The Artist," tells an interviewer the silent film's script was, unsurprisingly, "very thin." Is she expecting a big night this evening?" "Yes, I am," she replies. And she could be right: "The Artist" has been sweeping the precursor awards from the Golden Globes to the BAFTAs and last night's Independent Spirit Awards; can anything stop it now?

0000 GMT: Welcome to AFP's live coverage of the 84th Annual Academy Awards -- the coveted Oscars.

The pinnacle of the glitzy awards season, the Oscars have drawn the industry's biggest names to the Hollywood & Highland Center, which recently dropped the name Kodak Theater. Heartthrobs and buddies George Clooney and Brad Pitt will face off in the best actor category, as will veteran actresses Meryl Streep and Glen Close for best actress.

But much of the pre-show buzz has been for the French black-and-white silent film "The Artist." After wracking up a clutch of awards in the run-up to tonight the film is a favorite. It is up for a whopping 10 awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Frenchman Jean Dujardin for the top acting award.

Hundreds of millions around the globe are expected to tune in for the ceremony hosted once again by veteran US actor Billy Crystal, after A-listers strut their stuff down the most-watched red carpet in the world.
