Australian Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu pleaded guilty at a politically charged trial in Shanghai on Monday to taking bribes, a defence lawyer told AFP.

Emerging from the Shanghai court after the first day of proceedings, attorney Tao Wuping told AFP that Hu had been charged with accepting six million yuan (880,000 dollars) in bribes.

Hu had pleaded guilty, said Tao, who represents Hu's fellow defendant Liu Caikui, one of three Chinese employees of the Anglo-Australian mining giant who are also in the dock to face bribery and trade-secrets charges.
