4500 Couples Tie Knot in Mass Jakarta Wedding
More than 4,000 underprivileged couples were legally joined together in matrimony in a mass wedding ceremony held in Senayan Stadium, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The 4,501 couples wedded were from low-income families across the capital who had already been married in religious ceremonies, but were unable to obtain certificates because they could not afford to pay the administration fees.
The youngest new couple were a pair of 16-years-olds, while the oldest love-struck bride and groom were both 86.
“We thank God for having answered our prayers. We finally got our marriage certificate,” said 86-year-old groom Rahman, from Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.
The event was organized by the Jakarta municipal government, the Pondok Kasih Foundation and television station B Channel.
Hana Ananda, the founder of Pondok Kasih, said there were still many couples in Indonesia who had not been able to legalize their marriage due to poverty.
“It touches my heart because there are people who still care for them [the couples] because they are the people who live in slum areas such as under the flyovers, dump-sites and others,” Hana said.
