Air Force Inks Deal for Six More Fighter Jets

The Indonesian Air
Force signed a deal for six new Russian-built Sukhoi fighter aircraft
as part of its strategy of strengthening air power.

The latest deal is expected to boosts its fleet in the Sukhoi squadron to 16 fighter jets.

“We
will soon finalize a deal with Sukhoi for six fighters,” Deputy Defense
Minister Syafrie Samsyuddin confirmed at a year-end press conference at
the Defense Ministry on Friday.

In a press release, the
ministry said Indonesia had committed to purchasing six Sukhoi Su-30MK2
aircraft in a procurement contract signed by the ministry and Russia’s
JSC Rosoboronexport at the ministry on Thursday.

The ministry said it expected the purchase would boost its capability to secure Indonesian airspace.

The six fighters will join ten other Sukhois in a squadron based at Makassar’s Hasanuddin Air Force Base.
