Antasari Azhar’s trial for allegedly masterminding the murder of businessman Nasrudin Zulkarnaen has gripped the public, but has also been very complicated. Here is a basic chronological breakdown of the main events in the trial, including some of the most controversial testimonies heard by the court.

Top Testimonies

Antasari Azhar’s hearings in the murder trial over the death of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen have always attracted wide media attention. His first hearing, in October 2009, was covered live by national television stations. The live coverage sparked controversy when the general prosecutor read a steamy indictment describing what allegedly happened inside Room 803 of the Hotel Grand Mahakam in Jakarta when Antasari met with Rani Juliani, the golf caddy who was also the third wife of the slain businessman and who allegedly had an affair with Antasari.

Political conspiracy theories aside, the public was curious about Rani, the woman who became the key witness in the murder. Rani caused a stir when she showed up at a hearing for the first time in November 2009 and her testimony was given in a closed court for “decency” reasons.

Besides that of Rani Juliani, the court heard other shocking testimonies during the length of the trial.

— Wiliardi Wizar gave a startling testimony on Nov. 11, 2009, where he alleged he was persuaded by Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji, who was then deputy chief detective of the National Police, and a number of other officials to say in his investigation report that Antasari ordered the murder of Nasrudin. He alleged that he was told that as compensation, Wiliardi would be freed from the case and only given a disciplinary penalty.

— Forensic expert Mun’im Idris alleged he was asked by police to erase his statements that said Nasrudin was shot by a 9 mm bullet. Mun’im refused the request.

— Yustia Probobawati, the chairwoman of the Forensic Psychology Association, said Antasari had undergone four psychological tests at the Jakarta Police Headquarters. She said Antasari was sensitive and paranoid about his power being disrupted.
