Barcelona-Chelsea Champions League Game Sets Twitter Record

The Champions League match between Barcelona and Chelsea on Tuesday set a new Twitter record for a sporting event. During the game, total global traffic on the platform peaked at 13,684 tweets per second.

This exceeded the previous record- 12,233 tweets per second during the Super Bowl in the United States in February.

The conversation peaked following Fernando Torres’ late injury-time goal, which tied the game at 2-2 and sealed Chelsea’s victory with a 3-2 aggregate score.

The Super Bowl saw a total of 13.7 million tweets. A Twitter spokesman said the company didn’t calculate the total number of messages sent during Tuesday’s football match.
