Book smart: An Kaliman

Book smart: An Kaliman

The experience of starting Papataka.com last year, with my partners Anson and Roy, was like starting any other business – though a little more difficult due to it being a new industry and technology. But we figured it was better to start something that no one understood, than to enter a market that someone else already dominated.

We felt that a web-based bookstore could better manage inventory and carry more titles than a brick-and-mortar store. There are millions of books in the world. There is no way a regular store can carry even five per cent of that number. And even if they have it in the store, good luck finding it. In a bookstore like ours, we know exactly what titles we have, and they’re always available.

The biggest challenge is in getting the content and getting local publishers on board, but we’re glad we’ve got some support. I explain to them that 90 per cent of the books circulating here now are in Java, but in the next decade, there will be more buying power emerging outside Java – and an e-bookstore will be able to capture these new consumers.
