Jakarta, Indonesia. The real life adventures of former al-Qaeda-linked terrorist Nasir Abas have become a new comic book in Indonesia depicting him as a militant villain who transforms into an invaluable ally in the fight against terrorism.

The story of the soft-spoken 42-year-old is well-known in Indonesia. He went from helping train Muslim militants who carried out the deadly Bali bombings in 2002 to informing police about the inner-workings of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network.

He’s also joined a government program to convince convicted terrorists that killing unarmed civilians is wrong.

Abas says he hopes the colorful comic by a nonprofit publisher, titled “I Found the Meaning of Jihad,” will help teach children not to make the same mistakes he did.
