Eight people were named as suspects on Monday for the illegal shipping of 113 containers packed with toxic waste and shipped to North Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok harbor by Hwang Hook Steel (HHS) in February.
“Eight people [have been] declared as suspects. Two are from China, the rest are from Indonesia. There may be other suspects as the case is still under investigation,” said Sudariyono, the deputy for environmental compliance at the environmental ministry.
He identified the suspects as CXK, a Chinese national and an official at HHS, as well as his staff, YJX, who is also a Chinese national. Suspect RS heads the Surveyor Indonesia (Sucofindo); his deputy RNJ was also named. Other suspects include a variety of directors from as of yet unidentified companies.
Sudariyono also said that his office has already gathered data on 1,202 suspicious containers that entered the country through several ports, including 989 through Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok harbor.
