Flooding, Landslides in Manado Kill 10
At least 10 people died in Manado after floods and landslides affected seven subdistricts in the North Sulawesi capital early on Sunday morning.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported on Sunday that nine of the 10 people died when they were buried by landslides, while another person was killed after being swept away by floodwaters.
“The number of victims may increase because the landslides were reported in a number of areas. We keep evacuating victims although evacuation is being hampered by floodwaters that still inundate some areas,” BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a press release.
Up to two-meter high floodwaters inundated more than 1,000 houses in the seven subdistricts, displacing more than 1,200 people.
The seven affected subdistricts are Tikala, Paal Dua, Singkil, Tuminting, Wanea, Sario and Wenang.
The BNPB has set up a shelter for refugees and is partnering with police and military personnel, among others, to continue evacuation efforts and administer aid at the shelter.
