Makassar. Four foreigners were found stranded on Pandangan Island, Pangkep district, South Sulawesi on Monday after their boat broke down.
Andrew Jennings, 37, and David Hodkinson, 32, from the United Kingdom, and Robert Azopadis, 51, and Lisa Chamberlain, 21, from Australia, were evacuated to Soekarno Hatta port in Makassar on Monday night.
“The location they were found is around Pandangan island, 80.4 kilometers from Makassar,” Roki Asikin, head of Makassar Search and Rescue Agency, said on Tuesday. “They were sailing from the Philippines heading to East Timor and Australia. But the propeller axis was destroyed, the fan was not working.”
At first they were suspected as illegal migrants. But the officers discovered they were on an adventure on a fiberglass-made boat.
Roki said their conditions were relatively stable and healthy. But they needed rest after drifting in the Makassar strait.
The agency first heard about the stranded foreigners from a report from the Australian Rescue Coordination Center on Monday afternoon.
The boat has been taken to Makassar and is under repair. The four adventurers plan to continue their travels after their boat is fixed.
