Former First Lady Hasri Ainun Habibie Dies At 72

Hasri Ainun Habibie, the wife of former Indonesian President BJ
Habibie died of colon cancer on Saturday afternoon in Munich,
Germany. She was 72 years old.

Mrs. Habibie was hospitalized at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat,
Klinikum Grohadern, Munich since March 23, 2010. She had had a
string of surgeries and other treatments in the past two months. She
died surrounded by her family and close relatives, a family spokesman
said.

“Pak Habibie gave his regards to all Indonesian people who had
prayed for Ibu Hasri,” Ahmad Watik Pratiknya the family spokesman
said in Metro TV. Ahmad Watik and other relatives had gathered at the
family home in Kuningan, South Jakarta.

Habibie had always stayed by her side since she was admitted to
the hospital. They had been married for 48 years and had 2 children.
The remains would be flown to Indonesia with the presidential plane
as soon as possible. The plane would depart from Jakarta on Sunday.
Mrs. Habibie would be buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South
Jakarta.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Boediono
expressed their condolences to the bereaved family.

“Mr. President expressed his deepest condolences. He’s still
coordinating with Vice President Boediono to discuss arrangements
(regarding Mrs. Habibie’s demise),” presidential spokesman Julian
Pasha said.

In recent years, Mrs. Habibie was active in social activities. She
founded Orbit Foundation which provides scholarship for students from
poor families and a cornea bank to help people with cornea
dysfunction.
