Indonesia is making big in-roads into the international art
scene. The value of pieces by Indonesian artists has been steadily
increasing — a piece by S. Sudjojono sold for $385,000 at an auction in
April, while a painting by Balinese artist Lee Man, “Bali Life,” was
sold for $3.24 million at a Sotheby’s sale in Hong Kong last year,
making it the most expensive work of art by a Southeast Asian artist
ever sold at auction.

“Indonesian Eye: Fantasies & Realities” is the latest sign of the
country’s rising international prominence. Featuring 41 diverse works
of contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures and installations
from a mix of 18 established and up-and-coming Indonesian artists, the
exhibition was displayed at the Ciputra Artpreneur Center in South
Jakarta for five weeks before a stint at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery
in London.
