Yogyakarta. The Indonesia
Badminton Association (PBSI)
on
Friday
named Trade Minister
Gita Wirjawan its new chief for the
next
four years
.

“We have
elected a new PBSI general chairman and Gita Wirjawan has been
elected by acclamation,” the chairman of the plenary meeting of
the 21st PBSI conference, Koedarto Pramono, said.

Gita, seen
as the frontrunner ahead of this week’s convention, secured the
support of 31 out of the 33 provincial chapters to beat
his
rival Icuk Sugiarto, the chief of the Jakarta chapter of PBSI.

Icuk was the 1983 men’s singles
world champion and
was touted
as a strong candidate for the position.

Gita
is replacing Djoko Santoso, who opted not to seek a third four-year
term and had voiced support for Gita. Djoko has been under fire, especially after the country’s
shuttlers failed to win a single medal from the Olympics, coming home
empty-handed from London last month for the first time since 1992.

Gita, who
doesn’t have any known ties
to badminton,
told the
participants he
hoped all
PBSI central and regional executive boards would remain united to
improve the country’s badminton performance.
