Titus Bonai’s adventure in the Land of Smiles looks likely to be short-lived.

The striker signed a one-year deal with Thai Premier League Club BEC Tero Sasana last week, but the move may fall through as his new club has yet to receive his the International Transfer Certificate.

An ITC is provided from one national association to another to facilitate the transfer of a player between countries.

Titus’s situation became muddier after he returned to Indonesia and his new club found it difficult to keep in touch with him, BEC Tero club director Robert Procureur said on Tuesday.

“We have yet to receive the ITC from his agent. Titus has also disappeared and we haven’t been able to contact him since Friday,” Procureur said, according to the goal.com website. “If we can’t get it by Friday, I will get new player to replace him to fill our Asian quota.”

It was unclear why the club presented Titus along with two other signings to local media last Tuesday despite having yet to receive the ITC.

Local media then reported that the transfer was illegal as the 23-year-old still had a contract with Persipura Jayapura.

Persipura secretary Thamrin Sagala confirmed that Titus’s contract with the Papuan side ran until September.

“We never agreed to terminate the contract after he left the club without our permission,” Thamrin said. “He can do whatever he likes, but we won’t be issuing his ITC because he’s still our player.”

Titus has been absent without leave from Persipura since May. The club, which plays in the breakaway Indonesian Super League, has barred its players from joining the national team, but Titus did so anyway as the Merah Putih took part in a tournament in Palestine in May.

The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has said Titus will be issued his ITC as soon as Persipura allows him to leave.

“He is still a Persipura player as there is no official clearance from the club. Once he gets the letter from Persipura, we will issue his ITC. The ITC is very important if players want to play abroad,” PSSI disciplinary committee chairman Benhard Limbong said.
