Jakarta Police will investigate claims that an advertisement for gubernatorial candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo was in violation of Indonesia’s campaign laws.

The Jakarta Election Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu Jakarta) said they will hand the case to Jakarta Police after deciding it violated the nation’s campaign laws.

“Panwaslu’s work to investigate the case has been completed,” M. Jufri, a member of Panwaslu, said. “But if the police need additional data, Panwaslu will give it.”

According to the complaint, The Association of Indonesian Traditional Market Traders (APPSI) ran a television ad supporting Jokowi’s bid for governor.

The complaint was filed by incumbent Governor Fauzi “Foke” Bowo’s re-election team.

The Solo mayor faces a maximum of 15 days in prison and Rp 1 million in fines if convicted, Panwaslu Jakarta head Ramdansyah said.

Panwaslu also recommended the Jakarta General Election Commission (Jakarta KPU) hand down an administrative sanction to Jokowi. It also recommended that the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) issue a warning to the stations that ran the ad.

Foke ’s camp allegedly asked Jokowi and APPSI head Prabowo Subianto to apologize for the advertisement. Prabowo declined the offer and failed to meet a Panwaslu summons.

Jokowi apologized for the ad and told supporters to tell them before running and ads supporting their bid.

The APPSI has denied doing anything wrong.

“We don’t want to apologize, because we did not violate any law,” APPSI lawyer Said Bachri said.

Jokowi’s team filed a similar complaint with Panwaslu over a comment made by Foke’s running mate Nachrowi Ramli during a meeting with the capital’s Betawi people.

Nachrowi said that any Betawi people who vote against him should leave Jakarta. The comment echoed one made by Foke weeks ago, when, while visiting the victims of a large fire in Jakarta, he told the homeless Jakartans to rebuild their homes in Solo if they vote for Jokowi.
