Kalimantan Teachers Push for Pay Raise
About 700 contract teachers in Kutai Kartanegara district, East Kalimantan, rallied on Thursday to demand that their salaries be raised to the regional minimum wage.
Hamid Hubaib, deputy chairman of a local teachers’ union, said the contract teachers currently earned Rp 830,000 ($91) a month for those with a high school diploma and Rp 974,000 for those with a university degree.
The district minimum wage is Rp 1,254,000, while the provincial minimum is Rp 1,177,000.
Hamid said the union was pushing for contract teachers with a high school diploma to earn Rp 1.2 million and for those with a university degree to get Rp 1.5 million per month.
