A 17-year-old senior high school student was fatally stabbed during a Wednesday afternoon brawl between rival private schools in Manggarai, South Jakarta in the second deadly street fight this week.

Students from SMU Yayasan Karya 66 and SMU Kartika Zenie got into a bloody battle on Jalan Minangkabau, Manggarai, South Jakarta, after about 20 students from both schools began pelting each other with stones at 1 p.m., police said.

Deni Januar, of SMU Yayasan Karya 66, was stabbed in the chest and stomach during the melee, Tebet police chief Adj. Comr. Samuel said.

He was rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) but doctors were unable to save him.

Police were gathered at the scene Wednesday afternoon.

“There are dozens of police officers investigating the incident scene,” Samuel said. “The blood has been covered by sand.”

Tenth grader Alawy Yusianto Putra was fatally stabbed in a similar brawl on Monday between students from public high schools SMU 6 and SMU 70. Police are currently looking for Alawy’s alleged killer, a 12th grader named Fitrah Rahmadani.

The Ministry of Education previously said it was investigating methods to curb the violence surrounding Jakarta’s high schools.

“Starting today we will draft reconciliation method,” Education minister Muhammad Nuh said on Tuesday. “Why can’t they as children of this nation live side by side in harmony. We’re sure and are determined that it can be done.”

Nuh said everyone from the Jakarta government down to the teachers and parents should be involved in working toward a solution. The key, Nuh said, is stopping the cycle of revenge.

“We will find model to cut off the revenge,” Nuh said.
