Murder Trial of Chinese Politician’s Wife Starts: Official
Gu Kailai, the wife of a high-flying Chinese politician brought down by a corruption scandal that has rocked the Communist party, went on trial for murder Thursday, a court official said.
A former international lawyer whose husband was one of China’s most promising political leaders until his dramatic fall from grace this year, she will face trial for intentional homicide.
If convicted, Gu faces the death penalty, although this is often commuted in the case of high-profile defendants.
The trial — one of the most high-profile in decades in China — began at 8.30 am (00:30 GMT) and will last just one day, Zhang Mi told AFP by telephone from the Hefei Intermediate Court.
