Nike Pushes Health in Aid of Street Kids
Sports apparel giant Nike is inviting avid runners and enthusiastic volunteers to drop by the second floor of Grand Indonesia on Wednesday and churn out a few kilometers on the treadmill for the kids of Jakarta.
Runners, teams of runners and individuals simply passing by the Nike store are encouraged to run on any of the five treadmills from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the company’s Game On, World: Run to Give.
For every five kilometers completed during the day, Nike will donate a brand new pair of shoes to Sahabat Anak, a non-profit organization concerned with the welfare of Jakarta’s street children.
“During the fasting month, we wanted to invite people to do good deeds and Sahabat Anak specializes in under-privileged youth development,” said Nino Priambodo, Nike Indonesia’s country marketing manager.
But if you’re not planning on drinking or eating anything until sundown, you can still participate.
“If some people are fasting and want to join after 5 p.m., they’re more than welcome to join the kids from Sahabat Anak and the Nike sponsored runners,” said Nino, who added that from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nike is inviting children from Sahabat Anak, Nike-sponsored athletes, the media and other special guests to take part in Run to Give.
Because it’s Ramadan, Nino said, Nike decided to tweak Game On, bringing it indoors and inviting people run as much or as little as they like. Everyone is encouraged to participate, whether they want to run for 30 minutes or 30 seconds.
Runners, who are asked to wear appropriate shoes and bring water and a towel, will also be given a chance to try out the new Nike+, a cross-platform smartphone application that tracks and measures a runner’s performance.
“The idea of Nike Indonesia combining sports and charity is great,” said Sahabat Anak Grogol’s treasurer Irwan Sujarwo, a long-time volunteer who helped coordinate the event.
“Everyone can be healthy and do charity at the same time. I’m hoping a lot of people will come out and participate in this event. We need to spread the idea helping these kids and coming out and running a few kilometers for the kids is a great way to get involved.”
