Tana Tidung, East Kalimantan. An overcrowded speed boat that was traveling from Malinau district to Tarakan city on Sunday, capsized leaving one person dead and two missing.

One passenger, Risnata Aditya, 6, was found dead. Two children, Grisnatalia, 3.5, and Reinhad, 2.5, are still missing.

“We have assigned a team of seven people to join the Bulungan police search for the other two missing victims,” head of East Kalimantan Search and Rescue Agency, Harmoniadi, said on Monday.

The boat, Harapan Baru Ekspress, was carrying 36 passengers, 27 adults and 9 children. It capsized on Sunday in the Sayap river, near Tideng Pale village, Tana Tidung district, East Kalimantan. The boat’s capacity was 25 passengers.

While Harmoniadi alleged that overcapacity was the cause of the accident, spokesman of the East Kalimantan Police Sr. Comr. Anthonius Wisnu Sutirta told Kompas.com that the boat capsized after it crashed into a wooden log.

“Because of panic, the passengers gathered at the right side and that caused the boat to tilt and capsize,” Anthonius said. “At the moment, the captain and the crew have been arrested to provide explanation regarding the accident.”
