Rio Haryanto, who is racing for the Marussia F1-assisted Carlin team, is making his debut in the Monaco Grand Prix on Friday, taking part in the classic race at the 24th position.
In the B qualification session, Rio placed 12th with a time of 1 minute 23.539 seconds while his team mate Max Chilton led the A qualification with a time of 1 minute 21.320 seconds.
Even though he starts at the 24th position, Rio said he saw no problem and even added that he can save tires during qualification.
“The Monaco circuit is an extraordinary one! I am really relieved that I finished the qualification and practice runs without hitting a wall. It really was a valuable opportunity to take part in a race I have been waiting for,” Rio said.
He said he was thankful he had been able to save one set of tires for the race.
“Hopefully, this can become a asset to improve on my racing position,” he said in a media release on Friday.
The pole position is held by Johnny Cecotto, followed by Chilton in second place. Nineteen-year-old Rio was currently in 12th with the preliminary ranking of 16 points.
