Resentment from not getting a job at Surya Citra Televisi may have driven the man who threw a Molotov cocktail at its building on Saturday, the police said.
On Saturday afternoon, 30-year-old Budiyanto allegedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at the entrance of the SCTV building in Senayan, South Jakarta.
Police believe two men on a motorcycle rode up to the building at 4 p.m. on Saturday and the passenger hurled a Molotov cocktail at the building, destroying a window on the second floor.
Security guards at the location chased after the men and managed to capture one of the suspects, Budiyanto.
“He once applied [for a job] at SCTV,” Jakarta Police spokesman Rikwanto said at police headquarters on Monday.
“But he couldn’t provide further detail when asked about it. It’s believed he felt resentful.”
During his questioning, Budiyanto continuously changed his answers, Rikwanto said.
“First he said he came with a motorcycle, then he said he took a bus, then he said he stole a bottle and filled it up with gasoline. A psychologist will examine the perpetrator because he kept changing,” the spokesman said.
On Sunday, Rikwanto said Budiyanto was not a terrorist and that the crime was not being treated as an act of terrorism. The man was merely depressed, he added.
A search of Budiyanto’s house in Pondok Labu, South Jakarta, did not reveal anything that suggested he was a terrorist.
The police learned from the man’s father that his depression stemmed from his unemployment.
“Based on information from his father, Umijo, the person in question suffered depression since he stopped working as a stonemason in Tanjung Priok,” Rikwanto said. “He often didn’t go to work when his mother was ill. Since then, he frequently loses his temper and he often hits his mother and father.”
Budiyanto was kicked out of the place he used to live by neighbors because of his violent ways, Rikwanto said. The neighbors wanted his parents to take him to a doctor, but they couldn’t afford it.
The police will take Budiyanto’s parents in for further questioning at their headquarters, the spokesman said.
“Investigators will also examine the mental health condition of the perpetrator. So far, the motive is still unknown because the perpetrator refuses to talk,” he said.
A Molotov cocktail is a crude petrol bomb consisting of a glass bottle semi-filled with flammable liquid and plugged with some sort of fuse.
