Every August, when the Earth passes through a stream of space debris left by the comet Swift-Tuttle, the Perseid meteor shower is sparked. The phenomenon has been observed for 2,000 years, starting in the Far East. Catholics call it the Tears of St. Lawrence, as Aug. 10 is his day of martyrdom.
