Ten Iraqi Asylum Seekers Arrested
Jambi, Sumatra. Jambi police on Tuesday said they arrested ten Iraqi asylum seekers in transit through Indonesia on their way to Australia.
They were arrested on Monday by a Muarojambi police patrol team when the minibus they were traveling in passed in front of a police office. None of the refugees had immigration documents, so police detained them.
The refugees admitted to the police that they were in Indonesia on their way to seek asylum in Australia, claiming that their country was no longer safe for them.
The asylum seekers were reportedly trying to utilize as many land routes as possible before making the final push by sea to Australia; that decision was likely inspired by the recent and tragic spate of sinkings of multiple refugee boats.
