A series of unfortunate events was part of the lead-up to the announcement of the 2010 Indonesia Film Festival nominations on Friday.

Only the previous day, the FFI committee said they were dismissing the chairman of its panel of judges, Jujur Prananto. In an earlier incident last month, one of the scheduled FFI presenters, actor Robby Shine, was arrested on rape allegations.

Then, there was veteran actress Ida Kusumah, who was supposed to make an appearance at the event, but died while filming a soap opera in Jakarta.

The announcement of the nominees was made over RCTI’s music show “Dahsyat.”

The films are currently being screened at the festival in Batam, Riau Islands province. Actress and FFI chairwoman Ninik L. Karim, said they picked Batam for the festival’s 35th year because they wanted to tap the potential of the region.

Meanwhile, dismissed chairman Jujur said he was relieved to be fired from his post because, in his words, “I didn’t have to lie to myself.”

Jujur and his team put director Hanung Bramantyo’s highly-acclaimed “Sang Pencerah” (“The Enlightened One”) on the nominee list.

But according to Deddy Mizwar, an IFF committee member, the biopic about prominent Muslim scholar K.H. Ahmad Dahlan did not qualify for inclusion in the festival.

Deddy did not elaborate on the specific reason the film failed to quality.

Leading the nominations was “Alangkah Lucunya Negara Ini” (“How Funny This Country Is”) which garnered 12 nominations, followed by “3 Hati, 2 Dunia, 1 Cinta” (“3 Hearts, 2 Worlds, 1 Love”) with 11 and “I Know What You Did on Facebook” with 10.

The winners will be names at an awards ceremony on Dec. 6 at Central Park, West Jakarta, which will be aired on RCTI.
