This Week in Colombia: On Secret Service Scandal and Hillary ‘Hillz’ Clinton

Abdul Qowi Bastian

Earlier this week, three US Secret Service employees were asked to leave the agency over a sex scandal in Colombia which has tarnished the elite presidential protection agency’s image.

On Thursday, one of the Secret Service supervisors made light of his official protective work on his Facebook page. Identified as David Randall Chaney, 48, he joked about Sarah Palin, whom he was protecting during the 2008 presidential campaign.

“I was really checking her out, if you know what I mean . . . ”

He left that comment on a photo that shows him, in duty in a dark suit, keeping watch over the vice presidential candidate. Chaney is married and has an adult son. Kind of an unacceptable behavior, don’t you think?

Palin responded to Chaney’s revelation: “I hope his wife … sends him to the doghouse — as long as he’s not eating the dog, along with his former boss.”

Her reaction was in light of Mitt Romney’s campaign to attack Obama for eating dog meat as a child — in Indonesia!

In his memoir, “Dreams From My Father,” Obama revealed that he ate dog meat when he was a little boy in Indonesia.

“With Lolo … I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths,” Obama wrote.

I don’t know about you, but for as long as I have lived in Indonesia I have never eaten a dog meat.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton was out partying (and drinking beers!) at the Cafe Havana in Cartagena, Colombia. Although a few critics jeered at her actions — which most see as an impropriety — Hillary only reinforced her popularity among the younger demographics.

Speaking of her popularity, Hillary Clinton jumped on the “Texts From Hillary” bandwagon. If you missed the news, two guys who go by the name Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe, created a meme which turned the Secretary of State into an Internet celebrity overnight.

BuzzFeed, a viral detector Web site, called “Texts From Hillary” the “best political meme of the election.” Go here for images of the sassy Secretary featuring supporting characters such as Mark Zuckerberg, Joe Biden and even the President himself: http://textsfromhillaryclinton.tumblr.com/

Unfortunately, the duo called it quits after “an overwhelming and hilarious week.” Of course, what started as a joke at some bar between two young guys was topped off when the Secretary herself contributed a submission to the site. She even nicknamed herself as “Hillz.”

But I’m sure the reason the site stopped the viral trend is not because the memes have gone too far. It’s because the Secretary is kind of busy dancing in Colombia, and she cannot text. (Click for photo here

Who knew Hillz is kinda hip, huh? Hillz bringing the lulz, gals.
