PT Timah, the country’s largest tin producer, plans to increase mining of deposits in the sea as illegal miners encroach on its land, the company’s president director, Wachid Usman, has said.

Offshore mining could account for 60 percent to 70 percent of total output this year, Wachid told reporters on Monday at a conference in Jakarta. “We’re competing with illegal miners that operate near and within our mining areas,” he said.

Timah’s ore output from offshore deposits accounted for 48 percent of total production last year, amounting to 37,701 metric tons, according to its Web site. The Bangka-Belitung-based company is maintaining a refined tin output target of 50,000 tons for the year, Wachid added.
