Two More Suspects Arrested for Attempted Angkot Rape
The Central Jakarta Police have arrested two more suspects for an attempted rape on board an angkot, or public minivan. Authorities are still searching for the two remaining suspects.
“We have arrested two more suspects, bringing the total to three,” Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Angesta Romano Yoyol said on Thursday. “We are still searching for the other two; officers in the field are still hunting for them.”
The police had already arrested the driver of the car, A.A. The 16-year-old and his four companions tried to rob and rape a woman on Monday night in an Angkot C01 with the planned route of Ciledug-Kebayoran Lama. But on that night, the car changed its route and headed toward Senen.
Their attempt failed because an Army Special Forces (Kopassus) member passed by on his motorcycle and heard the victim screaming inside the vehicle. The soldier, 2nd Sgt. Nicholas Sandi, decided to chase the car. He banged his helmet against the minivan door, but the driver did not stop. Nearby motorcyclists joined in the rescue effort.
A.A. and the other passengers pushed the victim out of the minivan. Nicholas’ girlfriend Anita took her to the nearest police station while he continued the chase. He followed A.A. to Dukuh Atas, where Nicholas was able to detain the young driver.
The police chief said A.A. and his friends had rented the angkot for Rp 30,000 ($3.15) with the intention of only robbing passengers, but apparently — in Angesta’s words — got “too excited.”
