The world’s largest online video sharing community, YouTube, on Thursday launched its new version for Indonesian users at youtube.co.id. Besides targeting more local viewers, its launch is also aimed at attracting local advertisers.
“YouTube Indonesia is a bridge for any kinds of industries, such as media, recording and consumer goods, to advertise their product or work, so they can establish close relations with their consumers,” said Rudy Ramawy, the country head of Google Indonesia, YouTube’s parent company.
Rudy said YouTube Indonesia had secured several big advertisers that would be given brand channels to promote their products, including Telkomsel, Unilever Indonesia, Bank Central Asia and Blibli.com. It has also established cooperative agreements with some Indonesian media.
“YouTube makes it easier to distribute content and to get higher viewers,” Rudy said.
While many Indonesian artists have complained about online music piracy, YouTube will give them additional incomes by placing advertisements prior to their music videos’ viewing.
YouTube’s Asia-Pacific director of product management, Adam Smith, said 70 percent of YouTube viewers were outside the United States. In Asia, Indonesia boasts the highest potential viewer count.
Smith said one benefit for Indonesian viewers accessing the new YouTube version is that they will be able to watch a live stream of the upcoming London Olympic Games, to be held from July 27 to Aug. 12.
