Cid! This is awesome :) I'm very happy that everything worked out for you and your event. It's so cool that you got all this attention for what you've done. Who would have thought a simple fan group on Facebook would turn into this?

Also, it's wonderful being one of those "people from around the world" you've gotten to know. You're awesome :)

One person working diligently alone can do wonders, but many people working harmoniously together can accomplish worlds,” singer Brandon Boyd of American rock band Incubus said in a statement on the band’s official Web site, referring to the band’s establishment of the Make Yourself Foundation in 2003. The nonprofit funds environmental causes and charities around the world through some of the proceeds Incubus gets from touring, record royalties and online auctions.

Incubus’s mission to give back and help those in need has also had an impact on the band’s many fans worldwide, and has reached Indonesia through Incunesia, the largest fan club dedicated to the band in the country with almost 1,000 members.

Incunesia was founded in August 2009 by Chydie Darmodihardjo, who has been a fan of Incubus since she saw them perform live in Jakarta two years ago.

“I have always liked their music, but I guess I was just a regular fan,” Chydie said. “After seeing their concert, everything changed. It was incredible seeing them live, and I went completely nuts.”

So she decided to create a Facebook fan page under the name of Incunesia, a fusion of Incubus and Indonesia. The first meeting followed two months later, and the fan club started to grow. Chydie now has a team of 15 people who are all helping her to manage Incunesia.

“At the beginning, we were only a Facebook group, but now we have our own blog, a Web site, our Twitter account,” she said. “We also have our own YouTube, which is filled with local bands from Indonesia singing Incubus songs.”

Chydie could have left it at creating and managing the fan club, but she wanted to do more. So she decided to organize a charity event.

“I contacted the Make Yourself Foundation and asked them if they could share some memorabilia with me for the charity event,” she said.

It was a shot in the dark. Chydie never thought that they would really respond to her request, she said with a laugh.

“The coordinator of the foundation sent me nine items, and I was really surprised,” she said. “When I realized that this is for real, I literally started shaking.”

Among the items Chydie received were autographed photos of the band, a book written by Boyd, posters and a DVD. All of the items were put up for silent auction at the end of the charity event.

The Incunesia for Make Yourself Foundation event took place earlier this month at the Hard Rock Cafe Jakarta. Besides the silent auction, local bands such as Good Morning Alice, Metro, Mike’s Apartment and Stereocase took the stage, performing only Incubus songs.

Chydie said the event was a success, and the proceeds from tickets and the silent auction — a total of Rp 12 million ($1,300) — would be split between worthy causes.

“Thirty-three percent goes to the Make Yourself Foundation,” she said. “And the rest goes to Yayasan Pita Kuning, a foundation taking care of children with cancer.”

Incubus also recorded a special video message for Indonesia which was played for the first time at the event, and can now be seen on the Incunesia YouTube page.

Chydie first became a fan of Incubus when she saw the band’s video for the song “Drive,” released in 2001.

“I thought, wow, this is really good music and a simple but memorable video,” she said. “And I like the fact that the band is very artistic, and that they just seem to be themselves.”

Chydie also stays in touch with Incubus fans outside of Indonesia. “This is the one thing I really think is fantastic,” she said. “Just because I like this one band, I have had the chance to get to know a lot of people from around the world.”

She said she hoped that Incunesia would continue to grow, and that the charity event could become an annual affair.

Personally, Chydie can’t wait for Incubus to come back to Indonesia.

“I was outbid for Brandon’s book,” she said. “I will buy it, and then I will get Brandon to sign it. That’s my goal.”
