Linda Rahman Ready to Take on the Censors Over Her New Film

Model turned movie producer Linda Rahman is unhappy with the censors’ treatment of her new film, “Bidadari Jakarta” (“Angel of Jakarta”). The movie, scheduled to be released this month, tells the story of a young woman from Kalimantan who moves to Jakarta to become a singer, but instead is forced into prostitution by human traffickers.

In an interview with Okezone.com, Linda said she planned to have her movie crew of 500 protest the cuts made by the Film Censorship Institute (LSF).

“I don’t care what the reason is. I want to know if LSI has any defense for its actions,” she said.

With the film also scheduled to be shown in Malaysia and Singapore, Linda said she was concerned those two countries might block the movie if it has been heavily censored at home. Linda said the LSI had no basis for cutting the scenes it did, which she said were central to the story because they reflected the real life of children on the street.

Artemus Jones, at the least you're honest, however, are you involved with some feminist movement?

What happened to the old adage of "a picture speaks a thousand words?" C'mon Artemus, you were cognizant of the reality that the picture was rather inappropriate and too seductive. This was the basis of our comments. Ask any adult and mature person, if otherwise.

Be a good sparring partner and stop jabbing, as you appear to be doing so. Where's that Ali upper cut in you?

By the way, you have not answered my question if you have seen this film. Don't be a "sniper nerd."

"Her eyes are beckoning for .......Oops!" - grow up

"beware! she bites!" - childish

Immature is pretty apt too though.

No despotic tendencies. Just enjoy a bit of a spar.

Artemus, sure like to have another person capable of playing with words too!

Shouldn't you use the word "immature?" which I'm beginning believe is a little more apt for you. "Childish" and "grow up" sounds a wee bit derogatory, don't you think so?

Would I be correct to assume, a feeling of despotism coming from you?

The figure is most certainly higher than 3,000. Those were only the case reported to IOM - an international organization - and don't include those reported to local agencies, or those not even reported at all...

Prostitution, unfortunately, is a major part of the illegal labor trade. And it is included in IOM's figures: 15.65 percent - well over 100 Indonesian women a year are forced against their will to work in the sex trade. Once again, those are only the cases that are reported. The majority would likely be too ashamed to come forward.

The fact that there are precious few films, books or even general community discussion addressing the taboo issue of human trafficking in Indonesia - much less the rest of the world - means that any awareness raising is critical. The only reason this illegal trade continues to thrive is because people don't know about the dark side of it.

There was only one comment that addressed the article's content. The rest were about the picture. Admittedly the image isn't appropriate, although I'm sure she didn't pick it out herself for the press release. But you're right: The moment you portray yourself (comment) in that form, then naturally you're going to be called childish. Sorry, fair game...

Artemus Jones.....I am 100% behind any film that exposes such issues, as I am sure is everyone who has commented here. I personally feel though, if you are promoting a serious issue, you ensure that the picture used to front the story portrays a serious image of yourself.

Artemus......have you viewed the film? I don't really enjoy viewing local productions. Do you really believe that this film is going to help reduce your reported figure of more than 3,000?

Anyway, I think the above figure is far too small .....it has to be more!

I have looked up the IOM site and noticed your figure are in line with their survey from June 2005-2009. They are reporting on human trafficking for labor and not prostitution. The biggest percentage is attributed to the "illegals" who flocked to Malaysia, and to be precise, according to the survey, 75.6% of the 3,000.

Does this look like you're barking up the wrong tree because we are commenting only on the above article's contents. You're taking it out of context. Your arguments.......strawman's!

The moment you portray yourself (picture) in that form, quite naturally comments will follow. It's fair game, my friend!

The article is about glossing over and censoring the important issues of human trafficking and forced prostitution and all you can comment on is the picture?

Based on IOM figures alone, more than 3,000 Indonesian women were trafficked over the past four years, almost a third of those children. Of those, more than 15 percent were forced into the sex trade, just under half suffered physical abuse, 20 percent experienced sexual harassment and 10 percent were raped.

Grow up...
