@Ardy: the giving to Haiti issue had been raised in Singapore as well previously (FYI, Elaine Low is actually Singaporean).

Singapore didn't give much to Haiti during the quake. I believe Indo has similar reason with Sg on this issue, is because Haiti doesn't have much trade with Indonesia while Japan has a lot. It might be cruel and unfair, but like you said, Indo is not exactly in place to waste money. And in terms of money well spent, it is well spent on Japan.

Phew...tough crowd. :) But I'm happy to see there are many generous people around. I wonder how many of us are living in a cardboard boxes by the railway or grew up anywhere near one, though.

In case anyone has not kept up with the news, Yen skyrocketed this morning. The Japanese gov't can print it's own money (and it has been doing just that) and their currency will be accepted internationally. To donate, Indonesia has to buy USD. we can only guess what it does to Rupiah.

Seriously, I'd prefer to hear the Lows giving 8.9 Billion Rupiahs away to help eleviate the sufferings of the Indonesia's poor. As for our government giving away tax-payers' money (in USD)....it's like stealing from the poor and giving it to the super rich. It just doesn't make humanitarian sense. I think sending expert assistance in the aftermath would have been a tremendous gesture that would be similarly appreciated by the Japanese.

Also, in case anyone is interested about per capita income: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/eco_gro_nat_inc_percap-gross-national-income-per-capita

Japanese: $35,474.10 per person

Indonesia: $599.24 per person

Isn't it justifyable that charity should begin at home? And oh:

Haiti: $480.52 per person (they had a devastating earthquake too in 2010 but not as much donation from our gov't or the Low's that we know of.... maybe done anonymously?)

Indonesia’s third richest family has donated S$1 million ($783,000) to the Japanese government as it attempts to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami disaster.

The Indonesian government also donated $2 million, Kyodo reported.

The Tokyo-based news agency reported that Elaine Low, 24, daughter of Low Tuck Kwong, owner of Bayan Resources, gave the Japanese Ambassador in Singapore Yoichi Suzuki a check for S$1 million.

The family has a reported wealth of $3.6 billion.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, speaking during an interview with Japanese media, said the government’s donation would be delivered to visiting Japanese parliamentary deputy minister for foreign affairs Makiko Kikuta on Wednesday.

‘’I will be announcing later this afternoon a modest, but at the same time, genuine contribution of financial support of US$2 million to the emergency relief efforts in Japan,’’ Natalegawa was quote by Kyodo as saying.

‘’It is a modest amount, but it is meant to reflect how genuinely we feel in having solidarity with Japan in their hour of need,’’ he said.
