Timaru, New Zealand. A man claiming to be the adopted son of former Indonesian President Sukarno admitted his guilt in court on Thursday for defrauding elderly Canterbury and North Otago investors of 1.6 million New Zealand dollars ($1.25 million), according to The Timaru Herald.

James Lindon Graham admitted his guilt on 99 charges of fraud, the newspaper reported. Only 6,720 New Zealand dollars have been recovered.

Over 10 years, Graham defrauded investors using an advanced fee scheme. He claimed he needed to pay fees in order to release funds. He told investors he had between $50 million and $100 million in gold bullion in addition to other sums.

Graham claimed that he was the legally adopted son of Sukarno and that he was given power of attorney by Sukarno’s son in 1998.

“He was one of a group of offenders, the others unknown. He was a conduit. Just as the investors would think a fee had been paid, they would be told that there was a further fee to be paid, and the story went on. A number of international organizations’ letterheads were used,” the presiding judge told The Timaru Herald.

Graham has been in custody since April 2010 and has served 17 months in jail already.
