Taufik Hidayat has started the year poorly, with the former world No. 1 ousted in the first round of the season-opening Korea Open Super Series Premier on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old shuttler, who ended a 13-month title drought by winning in Macau last month, fell 21-19, 21-15 to England’s Rajiv Ouseph at Seoul Olympic Gymnasium. Ouseph, world No. 24, will play Indonesian Simon Santoso, in the second round today.

Simon, seeded No. 8 in the $1 million tournament, earned his berth with a 21-11, 21-16 defeat of Japan’s Kazushi Yamada.

Tommy Sugiarto lost 21-14, 21-12 to Sho Sasaki, the No. 6 seed from Japan.

The first round of the season opener had other shock result as singles third seed Chen Long and fourth seed Peter Gade were knocked out of the tournament.

Chen retired from the game against Hsu Jen-hao of Taiwan because of an unspecified injury when the Chinese shuttler was 20-15 behind in the first game. Denmark’s Gade lost 21-9, 21-12 to Du Pengyu of China.

The biggest casualty of the first day was mixed doubles top seed Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei of China, who fell 21-19, 21-16 to Chris Adcock of England and Scotland’s Imogen Bankier.

The British tandem will play in the second round against another Chinese pair, He Hanbin and Yixin Bao, who beat Indonesia’s Muhammad Rijal and Debby Susanto 21-16, 21-14.

Indonesia’s top mixed double Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir struggled in the opener before coming back to win 16-21, 21-18, 21-13 over Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels.

The No. 4 seeds will play next against qualifiers Noriyasu Hirata and Miyuki Maeda, who ousted Toby Ng and Grace Gao 21-10, 21-16.

In women’s doubles, Vita Marissa and Nadya Melati stunned No. 3 seeds Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa 9-21, 21-14, 21-16.

Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari advanced to the second round with a 21-16, 21-17 win over Ng Hui Ern and Ng Hui Lin of Malaysia.

Men’s doubles pair Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, who hope to qualify for the Olympics this year, beat seventh-seeded Chai Biao and Gou Zhendong 22-20, 21-19 in 34 minutes.

The country’s young pair Angga Pratama and Ryan Agung Saputra, lost 21-12, 18-21, 21-17 to Taiwan’s Liao Min-chun and Wu Chun-wei in the opener.
