The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) on Friday revealed a 20-member squad for the 2010 Thomas and Uber Cups featuring the country’s best shuttlers.
The squad includes highly-ranked players who have left the national team, including men’s singles Taufik Hidayat and men’s doubles Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.
Taufik and Markis confirmed they would answer the call and try to help Indonesia win its first men’s Thomas Cup since 2002.
“I always say that even though I’m not at Cipayung [the national team training camp] anymore, I’ll be ready if the country needs me,” Markis said.
In addition to the stars, eight shuttlers will be getting their first taste of the elite world team championships.
Maria Febe Kusumastuti, Aprilia Yuswandari, Shendy Puspa Irawati, Meiliana Jauhari and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari will make their Uber Cup debuts this year. Muhammad Ahsan, Rian Sukmawan and Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki will play in their first Thomas Cup.
The Asian zone qualifying round will be in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Feb. 21-28. The four top Asian teams will qualify for the tournament proper in Kuala Lumpur from May 9-16.
“I’m so excited to know my name is really on the list. This is a dream comes true for me,” Febe, 20, told the Jakarta Globe.
Rian and Yonathan, the men’s doubles world No. 15, are also looking forward to their debut.
“This is our moment. We finally proved that we deserve to represent our country,” Rian said.
In the Malaysia Open Super Series, mixed double No. 5 seeds Hendra Aprida Gunawan and Vita Marissa failed to reach the semifinals, falling 21-11, 21-14 to unseeded Tao Jiaming and Zhang Yawen of China on Friday.
Flandy Limpele, who played alongside Taiwan’s Chen Wen Hsing, lost 21-10, 19-21, 21-13 to Chen Hung Ling and Chou Chia Chi of Taiwan.
