Indonesia’s shuttlers had to scuffle to reach the Korea Open Super Series quarterfinals. They got there, though, which was more than some of the tournament’s top names could say.

Nine seeds bowed out at the Olympic Fencing Stadium in Seoul on Thursday. Indonesia’s Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Hendra Aprida Gunawan were not among them, fighting past Thailand’s Songphon Anugritayawon and Sudket Prapakamol 21-13, 26-28, 22-20.

Alvent and Hendra, No. 3 seeds in men’s doubles, face Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo Yoshiteru Hirobe in today’s quarterfinals. The Japanese pair beat Fang Chieh Min and Lee Sheng Mu of Taiwan 14-21, 21-15, 21-19, while the other quarterfinal in their side of the bracket pits fifh-seeded Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng of China against second-seeded Danes Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen.

Korea’s top-seeded Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae cruised into the last eight on the other side of the draw. Their path to the final got easier when China’s unseeded Chai Biao and Zhang Nan upset No. 4 seeds Lars Paaske and Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark 21-14, 21-14.

Former Indonesian national team shuttler Flandy Limpele is also still going, having reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals with partner Cheng Wen Hsing of Taiwan. The duo held off Taiwan’s Fang and Wang Pei Rong 11-21, 21-15, 21-11.

Flandy and Cheng will meet fourth-seeded Thais Songphon and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul in the last eight, which includes five seeded pairs.

Indonesia-born Weny Rahmawati, who now represents France, lost in the women’s doubles second round. She and partner Laura Choinet fell 21-14, 21-18 to Korea’s Jung Kyung Eun and Yoo Hyun Young.

Weny and Choinet joined the fourth, fifth and seventh seeds in departing the tournament on Thursday.

Women’s singles was rife with upsets on Thursday. Top-seeded Tine Rasmussen of Denmark bowed out, as did No. 4 seed Juliane Schenk of Germany and fifth-seeded Wang Xin.

Men’s singles was all too predictable, with each of the top eight seeds advancing. Badminton
