Worries about Indonesia’s fading prominence in world badminton were only further stoked by the latest underwhelming performance by the country’s shuttlers.

Indonesia was shut out of the Korea Open Super Series Premier semifinals after its last three entries lost on Friday, leaving its hopes of a large Olympic badminton contingent further damaged.

Its best hope, mixed doubles No. 4 seeds Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, lost 21-16, 15-21, 21-16 to unseeded Lee Yong-dae and Ha Jung-eun of South Korea at Seoul Olympic Gymnasium.

“I don’t know why, but we made lots of mistakes after playing well in the second game,” Liliyana said.

Simon Santoso, seeded eighth in men’s singles, lost 21-16, 21-19 to unseeded Du Pengyu of China, while Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari fell 21-8, 21-9 to No. 4 seeds Ha and Kim Min-jung of South Korea in women’s singles.

Indonesian shuttlers, trophyless in the Super Series since Liliyana and Tontowi won the Singapore Open last June, are struggling to qualify for London. The top 16 in singles and the top eight in doubles in the world ranking as of May 3 qualify automatically.

As of now, only the three Korea Open quarterfinalists, men’s singles shuttler Taufik Hidayat and Bona Septano and Mohammad Ahsan in men’s doubles would qualify.
