As Lee Chong Wei stepped up his bid for a fourth consecutive Super Series Finals title, Indonesian shuttlers faltered.
The Malaysian world No. 1 trounced Indonesia’s Simon Santoso, 21-10, 21-15, in their Group A men’s singles match in Liuzhou, China, on Thursday.
The result sent Lee through to the semifinals and eliminated the Indonesian from the $500,000 season-ending tournament.
Lee buried 15 smash winners as he sent Simon packing in just 34 minutes, after taking three games to beat Japan’s Sho Sasaki on the opening day.
It was Simon’s second consecutive loss after falling to Peter Gade of Denmark on the first day.
The tournament features the top eight players in each division, and only the two top finishers in each group advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
Another Indonesian men’s singles shuttler, Taufik Hidayat, lost his chance of qualifying from Group B after falling 21-12, 21-19 to second-seeded Lin Dan of China.
Taufik will face Chen Long in the last group match today.
World No. 5 Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir failed to clinch a spots in the semifinals as they lost 17-21, 21-7, 22-20 to Chinese pair Xu Chen and Ma Jin.
The Indonesian mixed doubles pair, who won their opener against England’s Robert Blair and Gabrielle White, still have a chance at the semifinals if they beat top seeds Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei of China in their last Group A match today. But it will also depend on the result of Xu and Ma’s match against Blair and White.
If both pairs win their matches, Xu and Ma will go through based on their head-to-head record. Zhang and Zhao already secured a place in the next round with their 21-10, 21-18 defeat of Blair and White.
