After much talk about boosting its players’ regeneration, the Indonesian Badminton Association hopes to see its plan put into action at this week’s Malaysia Open Super Series.
Of the 18 names the association (PBSI) registered for the year’s second top-flight tournament, which begins today at Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, eight were called up from the PBSI’s second-tier squad.
Two of the shuttlers — Annisa Wahyuni and Anneke Feinya Agustin — will team up in women’s doubles. They made their Super Series debut six months ago at the 2009 Indonesia Open in Jakarta, where they lost in the second round, and they won the Vietnam Open Grand Prix in their last appearance together in international competition.
“It is a good chance to see their progress after the last Super Series and evaluate their performance,” national women’s doubles coach Aryono Miranat told the Jakarta Globe on Monday.
He also said he appreciated the PBSI’s effort to promote younger players’ development by giving them more chances to compete abroad.
“By competing in international tournaments, they will get more experience and we will not lack in players stock,” Aryono said.
Four of the PBSI’s other youngsters will compete in mixed doubles. Muhammad Rijal will team up with Debby Susanto, while Fran Kurniawan Teng was scheduled to play alongside Pia Zebadiah Bernadet.
However, Fran and Pia had to pull out of the Malaysia Open after Pia suffered a recurrence of her right knee injury during training last week.
Despite the setback, Fran said he was grateful for the chance to show what he can do on an international level.
“This is our time, the young players, to receive the responsibility to replace our seniors. We’re ready for that,” Fran said.
“Yes, we used to feel worried about losing when we found out we would face tougher opponents in previous competitions. But with the chance given to us, we are more excited and confident to face them.”
With Pia as his partner, Fran hopes the duo can break into the world top 16 this year and make their debut at the 2010 World Championship, which takes place in Paris on Aug. 23-29.
The duo, currently ranked 19th in the world, has two chances to improve their standing — the All England (March 9-14) and Swiss Open (March 16-21).
The other Indonesian hopefuls are men’s singles shuttler Tommy Sugiarto and Linda Weni Fanetri in women’s singles. Both are scheduled to begin their Super Series run as qualifiers.
