Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir will cut a lonely figure at the Malaysia Open Super Series this weekend after all their compatriots crashed out of the year’s second top-flight tournament.

Fourth-seeded Tontowi and Liliyana advanced to today’s mixed doubles semifinals at Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur with a 22-20, 21-9 defeat of Thailand’s Maneepong Jongjit and Savitree Amitapai.

While they take on No. 2 Xu Chen and Ma Jin of China in the last four, though, Indonesia’s other three entries will be catching flights home. Men’s doubles No. 8 seeds Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan pushed third-seeded Chai Biao and Guo Zhendong before falling 21-16, 18-21, 21-17 in men’s doubles, while Taufik Hidayat and Simon Santoso bowed out in men’s singles.

A day after announcing this year would be his final attempt at the Olympic Games, Taufik struggled to put up resistance against No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. The host country’s star brushed aside the former world No. 1 to win 21-9, 21-18.

Simon, meanwhile, failed to live up to his No. 7 seed as he lost 21-15, 21-9 to unseeded Kenichi Tago of Japan. The shuttlers were tied at 13 in the first set before Tago proceeded to dominate the rest of the match.

Tontowi and Liliyana won Indonesia’s only Super Series titles last year, triumphing in India and Singapore. The country’s last top-tier title from someone other than those two was Taufik’s victory in the 2010 French Open.
