Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has announced plans to set up a badminton academy to re-establish his country’s position as a leader of the sport.

“If there is no systematic development in the sport, we may run out of players of caliber in the future,” Najib was quoted as saying by The Star newspaper. He said potential locations for the national academy were being identified.

Najib also said the government would provide 2 million ringgit ($600,000) to pay bonuses in arrears for players and coaches. The cash allocation was announced after Malaysia’s world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei won his first All England title over the weekend.
