Keeping with its focus on quality over quantity this season, the Indonesian Badminton Association announced on Thursday it would not send its national team shuttlers to the Swiss Open Super Series.
The association (PBSI) made the announcement just two days into the All England, the year’s first European Super Series tournament. Basel hosts the Swiss Open from March 16-21.
“The PBSI decided in a recent meeting that [national team] players will skip the Swiss Open so that they can have early training and focus on the Thomas and Uber cups’ final rounds,” PBSI head of athletes’ development Lius Pongoh told the Jakarta Globe on Thursday.
Most of the national team shuttlers will fly home once the All England finishes on Sunday.
Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka and Maria Febe Kusumastuti, however, will compete in Switzerland. Both are Djarum Kudus Club shuttlers who were named to the national team last month. Lius said they had already committed to play in the tournament for their club.
In addition, top professional shuttlers such as Taufik Hidayat, Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan will play in Switzerland.
Indonesia earned berths in the Thomas and Uber cups’ finals during Asian qualifying last month, with the men winning their tournament and the women coming in second. Kuala Lumpur hosts both events on May 9-16.
The only tournament between now and the finals is the Asian Championship in New Delhi from April 12-18.
“It will be the last warm-up for the shuttlers. We’ll announce later who’ll go to India as we’re still waiting for the PBSI president’s approval,” Lius said.
Indonesia’s men were drawn in Thomas Cup Group D with Australia and India. The women landed in Uber Cup Group B with Australia and Denmark.
