Defending its home court is more important than ever for Satria Muda Britama.
Its 72-53 loss at the Philippines Patriots on Wednesday left it down 2-0 in the best-of-five Asean Basketball League finals. The Patriots can clinch the title with a win in Jakarta on Sunday.
Satria Muda managed to cool off Gabe Freeman, who scored 39 points in the Patriots’ 78-68 Game 1 win on Feb. 12. It limited the American to 23 points and 13 rebounds, his sixth double-double in six games with the club, but fellow US imports Robert Wainwright and Jason Dixon picked up the slack.
Wainwright finished with 16 points, hitting four of his eight 3-pointers, while Dixon had 11 points and 10 rebounds. None of the seven other Patriots to see time scored more than five points, but the host’s defense kept Satria Muda from making any inroads.
The Patriots forced 17 turnovers, 11 of which came on steals. The Indonesians struggled with every part of their shooting, going 21 of 63 (33 percent) from the field, 7 of 28 on 3-pointers and 4 of 11 on free throws.
Rony Gunawan led Satria Muda with 15 points and seven rebounds. Nakiea Miller, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds in Game 1, struggled to 11 points on 5-of-20 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, while Alex Hartman hit four of his 12 shots to score 12 points. The other seven players combined for 15 points.
Game 3 takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday in Britama Arena. Satria Muda must beat the Patriots for the first time in six tries in order to extend its season.
