Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant delivered his third-straight 40-point NBA game on Friday, scoring 42 as the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Cleveland Cavaliers 97-92.

Pau Gasol added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who gave head coach Mike Brown the victory in his first game against his former team.

The Lakers have won five straight and improved to 9-4 overall and to 8-1 at their home arena of Staples Center.

They play in Los Angeles again on Saturday, but it will be cross-town rivals the Clippers playing host at their shared stadium.

Although playing with a torn ligament in his right wrist, Bryant scored 48 points in a win over Phoenix on Tuesday and 40 in a victory over Utah a day later.

Despite his exploits the Cavaliers didn’t go quietly, whittling the Lakers’ 12-point lead heading into the final quarter to 82-79 with seven minutes remaining.

“It’s always good to have a guy like Kobe Bryant in your back pocket when you have to try to figure out a way to win ugly games,” Brown said.

Daniel Gibson could have knotted the score but missed a three-pointer and Bryant got the rebound to stop the Cavs’ surge.

Bryant, 33, made 15 of his 31 shots, including four of seven three-pointers.

The last time Bryant had three straight games of at least 40 points was in March of 2007, when he had five in a row.
