Gabe Freeman lived up to his advance billing as the Philippines Patriots defeated Satria Muda Britama 78-68 in Game 1 of the Asean Basketball League finals series at Ynares Sports Center.

The Patriots, who finished first in the regular-season standings to earn home-court advantage, acquired Freeman after 13 of 15 regular-season contests. However, the Philippine Basketball Association MVP needed little time to settle in, finishing with double-doubles in every game for his new team.

That run continued on Friday as the 6-foot 5-inch American went off for 39 points to go with 12 rebounds, six of the points coming in a 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter. Satria Muda trailed 60-58 after three quarters.

Satria Muda led 56-50 late in the third before the Patriots surged ahead, earning their fourth victory in four contests against the Indonesian champion this season.

“It was a hard win because Indonesia played well defensively,” Patriots coach Louie Alas said. “We just have to sustain the momentum to take advantage of our home-court advantage.”

Freeman, who replaced Brandon Powell, played for the PBA’s San Miguel Beermen last season. He averaged 23 points and 15 rebounds, finishing the season with 22 double-doubles.

Jason Dixon added 13 points for the Philippines, while Robert Wainwright scored nine. Erwin Santa Maria was the leading Filipino scorer with eight points.

Nakiea Miller, whose inspired second half led Satria Muda past the Singapore Slingers in Game 3 of their semifinal series, led the visitors with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Fellow American import Alex Hartman had a quiet night, though, scoring 12 points. Mario Wuysang had 11 points to lead the Indonesian players, while Rony Gunawan finished with 10 points and seven rebounds and Youbel Sondakh had nine points and three assists.

The Patriots will host Game 2 on Wednesday at Fil Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan City before the series shifts to Jakarta.
