For three quarters, Satria Muda Britama appeared headed for its most important win of the season. But playing against the defending champion Philippine Patriots, the Indonesian basketball club just couldn’t get the job done.

Patriots guard Egay Billones scored 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, and the Philippine team used a 24-10 run in the second half to hand Satria Muda a deflating 75-69 loss in the Asean Basketball League in Pasig City on Saturday.

In the battle of big men, Patriots forward Donald Little finished with 11 points and 25 rebounds to neutralize Satria Muda’s Marcus Morrison.

Morrison finished with 32 points, but was hardly a factor in the final period when the Patriots locked down on defense to remain perfect after five games.

Mario Wuysang scored 13 points and Francis Adriano added 12 for Satria Muda, whose players wore black patches on their jerseys in honor of the victims of last week’s tsunami in the Mentawai Islands and the eruption of Mount Merapi in Central Java.

Facing the reigning champion for the first time since losing 3-0 in last season’s ABL finals, Satria Muda looked sharp through most of the game.

The Indonesian club held a lead at the end of each of the first three quarters, including a 59-53 edge heading into the fourth quarter. But the Patriots, the league’s top defensive team, held the visitors to 10 points the rest of the way and handed them their third consecutive defeat.

Despite the victory, Patriots coach Louie Alas said he was not satisfied with the performance of his team.

“We played inconsistently. We had a lousy practice during the week, but I told the players they can’t just come into a game and play. They have to earn victory,” he said.

In Kuala Lumpur, Alex Hartman scored 24 points and the Westports KL Dragons routed the undermanned Brunei Barracudas 87-48 in a game that was halted midway through the fourth quarter.

The Barracudas dressed only seven players for the game after league officials barred some members of the team from playing because they were stricken with eye infections.

At the 7:55 mark of the final quarter, the Barracudas were down to only four men after three of their players had fouled out.

The game was stopped at that point and the Dragons were awarded the victory, their second in five games.

The Barracudas fell to 1-4 and stayed in fifth place ahead of cellar dweller Satria Muda.
