Having successfully tamed the Tigers, now it’s time for Satria Muda Britama to slay some Dragons.
Satria Muda opened its Asean Basketball League account with a 78-75 victory over the Thailand Tigers in Bangkok on Nov. 18, and now it will chase its first home win on Sunday against the Kuala Lumpur Dragons.
Tip-off between Satria Muda (1-1) and the Dragons (1-1) is 3 p.m. at Britama Arena in Sportsmall, Jakarta, and head coach Fictor Roring insisted the crowd would get its money’s worth.
“We already got over our first loss to the Patriots. From now on, we want to take all our games,” Fictor told state news agency Antara. “The Dragons are a good team as they avenged their loss to the Brunei Barracudas in their away game.”
Kuala Lumpur began the ABL with a stunning 94-76 home loss to Brunei. The Dragons bounced back, though, winning 76-73 in Brunei behind Aaron Lynch’s 27 points. Jamal Brown added 15 points for the Dragons.
The Dragons also boast six players from the Malaysian national team, including Chze Hian Chai and Chuan Chin Wee, who led the team in scoring in the Brunei defeat.
Satria Muda also leaned heavily on its imports to secure its first victory in the regional league. Alex Hartman carried the bulk of the load, scoring 33 points and finishing as the only Satria Muda player in double figures. Theo Little put up nine points, and Fictor was not shy in admitting his team’s reliance on foreign talent.
“What can I say? I think everybody knows that they are still the best that we have,” he said.
Satria Muda is fourth in the ABL and Kuala Lumpur is fifth. The Singapore Slingers lead the league after beating Brunei (87-69) and the Philippines Patriots (74-69) at home.
While Satria Muda competes in the ABL, other Indonesian Basketball League teams are uncertain when they will return to competition. The IBL promoter reportedly plans to begin league play in February without holding the IBL Tournament, the annual preseason competition. If that scheduled stays in place, clubs will not have seen competitive action in six months.
Two clubs, Garuda Bandung and Pelita Jaya, were able to shake off some of the rust during a charity game to benefit earthquake victims on Thursday, and now they want to give other IBL clubs a similar opportunity.
“We plan to hold a tournament in Jakarta and Bandung. There will be two groups, and Pelita Jaya will host the event in Jakarta, while Garuda organizes Bandung’s event,” Pelita Jaya manager Ronald Simanjuntak said.
Garuda manager Simon Pasaribu said all clubs, including Satria Muda, would be invited to play from Nov. 23-28.
