Watatita: Do Not Abandon Our Indonesian Heritage

8:55am May 21, 2012

Learn Indonesian history, learn from past mistakes, learn from our culture. Read folktales, learn from its philosophies. As the late Great Dalang, Ki Narto Sabdo said, “Ojo ditinggal kepribaden Ketimuran.” (Do not abandon our Eastern self).

Watatita: What Can You Do for Your Country?

9:14am May 14, 2012

What can I do for Indonesia? It doesn’t matter if you’re a doctor, a university student, a middle school student – start asking yourself, what can you do for your country?

Watatita: I Love 'Made in Indonesia'

10:54am May 7, 2012

It is a matter of taste, but many people tend to feel more “expensive” or “valuable” when they use brands from overseas, or they think that local brands are not as good or not as well made. Women would spend a ridiculous amount of money on European skincare products such as Lancome, Chanel, and Clinique when Indonesian skincare products also do the job, they’re made for Asian skin and some specially for tropical climate, and they’re not too expensive.

Watatita: Indonesians Studying Abroad Ought to Toughen Up

11:07am Apr 30, 2012

University years are a time to grow up, be independent and learn how to survive in the big bad world. I understand if parents still pay their kid’s rent, school fees and other essential things, but seriously, if they want to purchase a Marc Jacobs bag or a ticket to watch football, they should earn the money themselves.

Watatita: Friendship and Respect Don't Recognize Class

10:46am Apr 23, 2012

In a country like Indonesia, especially in the capital city of Jakarta, differences between socio-economic classes are obvious. In other parts of the country, where people used to live under a feudal system during the era of kingdoms, some people still hold the belief that a nation should be classified into different castes. In other words, some people are seen to be better than others, just because they are wealthier.

Watatita: Indonesia Still Needs to Improve Its Disaster Management System

10:39am Apr 16, 2012

I know that predicting earthquakes is still essentially impossible, so the best thing for Indonesia to do is improve and perfect its disaster management. And for those willing to help collecting donations, please do it with honesty, empathy and no corruption.

Watatita: Why We Shouldn't Allow Children to Watch Violent Movies

10:31am Apr 9, 2012

I don’t fully blame this all on the parents — the ticket sellers and the theater managers should also know better. How dare they let a 5-year-old watch “The Raid.”

Watatita: Are You Sure You Want to Wear That With Your Hijab?

10:50am Apr 3, 2012

They obviously don’t understand the purpose of their jilbabs. Women who choose to wear the jilbab and act and dress accordingly is acceptable and understandable. However, some women choose to wear jilbab due to peer pressure, so some of these women are not 100 percent up to the challenge. Even worse, some women wear jilbab only as a fashion trend.

Watatita: Monas, A Source of National Pride

10:27am Mar 26, 2012

Monumen Nasional, better known as Monas, is located right at the center of the city of Jakarta, and is both an icon of the city and a representation and reflection of Indonesia’s struggle for independence. I’ll admit that I only recently visited this landmark (and actually went inside). It’s quite embarrassing for a 25-year-old Indonesian girl who lives in Jakarta.

Watatita: School Students Must Learn About Religions Other Than Their Own

8:33am Mar 19, 2012

When I was still at school, I remember during religion class students from the same classroom breaking into different rooms. The Christians, Muslims, Catholics, Buddhists and Hindus all learned separately. Somehow I felt segregated. There shouldn’t be an Agama Islam or Agama Kristen course, there should be a theology course instead. Everybody in one classroom, learning about all the religions, beliefs, and spiritualities of the world.
