Same-Sex Marriage – A Matter for States to Decide, or a Constitutional Right?

8:53am May 18, 2012

I can understand and respect President Obama for making the political and pragmatic decision to take the first, courageous step to state his own personal position supporting same-sex marriage, while allowing states and local communities some time to decide for themselves.

Purple Nation: Obama and the Polls – Half-Full or Half-Empty?

9:31am May 10, 2012

Virtually every poll in the last two weeks — Gallup, Democracy Corps, USA Today, Rasmussen, New York Times/CBS — shows that Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are in a dead heat nationally as well as in the nine battleground states.

Holder, Fast and Furious, and the Double Standard

1:07pm May 3, 2012

Attorney General Eric Holder has been the subject of vicious partisan personal attacks on his integrity over the failed “gun walking” operation, “Fast and Furious.” The hypocrisy of the double standard by congressional Republicans is obvious.

Purple Nation: My Chuck Colson Lesson

4:33pm Apr 26, 2012

I learned an important lesson that night: I vowed that I would never use the word “hate” about people in politics with whom I disagreed. And I knew I would never forget this moment and what Charles Colson had taught me.

Purple Nation: Obama and Romney on Buffett Rule – Both Right … and Wrong

10:58am Apr 19, 2012

In other words, both President Obama and Mitt Romney are right about criticizing the other’s overhyped position on the Buffett Rule, and both are wrong not to endorse the one honest bipartisan proposal that would honestly attack the national debt: the Simpson-Bowles commission’s proposal to cut spending, raise taxes by closing loopholes and reform and reduce future hemorrhaging of Social Security and Medicare.

Purple Nation: Shapiro’s 'The Last Great Senate' a Must Read

11:22am Apr 17, 2012

For anyone interested in understanding why one of the great institutions of democratic government in the world — the United States Senate — has become so dysfunctional and paralyzed by partisanship, Ira Shapiro’s recently published book 'The Last Great Senate: Courage and Statesmanship in Times of Crisis', should be mandatory reading — not only by pundits and political science classes, but by every member of today’s Senate.

Tax Reform: The Perfect Purple Issue

10:46am Mar 1, 2012

So is real tax reform possible? Is this the one issue that can bring the hyper-partisan Congress together even while they seem unable to agree on a deficit-reduction plan — even when they face $1.2 million in across-the-board cuts in defense and domestic programs?

The PBS Clinton Series’ Lack of Proportionality

11:29am Feb 24, 2012

o watch four hours of the so-called documentary on the eight years of the Clinton presidency gave me the sensation of a report about a glass of water that is 75 percent full and 25 percent empty. The PBS presentation, I am guessing, spent 75 percent of the four hours reporting on 25 percent of the story, i.e., the issue of “scandal” in the Clinton presidency, omitting the substance and policy achievements of the Clinton presidency, i.e., issues that affected the lives of most Americans and that they care about most.

Inside the Romney Spin Room

10:43am Feb 9, 2012

The Spinmeister finally spoke. “Governor — what’s your reaction to Monday’s Washington Post-ABC poll, which found that 52 percent of the American people liked you less the more they got to know you, and only 24 percent liked you more?”

Purple Nation: Get Ready for the Obama Reagan-Clinton Pivot

10:29am Feb 3, 2012

The Republicans are making a big mistake by assuming they can successfully depict Barack Obama as an out-of-the-mainstream leftist. They are making it easier for him to move to the center, where he actually has been for most of his years in politics.
